As cliché as it might sound, it really is the little things that make the biggest difference when it comes to your wellbeing in sobriety. Here are 7 simple ways to set yourself up for a success with maintaining a sustainable, holistic sober lifestyle.
- Remove all alcohol from your house
Let’s start with the obvious, shall we? Creating physical barriers is a simple, yet effective way to reduce the likelihood of drinking. You may feel super confident that you’re not going to consume alcohol in this moment, but willpower is not an unlimited resource, so you’re better off not relying on it. - Make your mornings sacred
Are you immediately grabbing for your phone the moment you wake up? This common behavior instantly increases stress levels and hijacks your attention, just as you’re emerging out of your most calm, clear and rested state. Try switching it up with a little breathwork, meditation, gentle movement and journaling and see what a difference it makes. Here’s a link to my bundle of practices if you need guidance. - Move your body
Movement has endless benefits, and you definitely don’t need to be running marathons or taking it to extremes at the gym to experience them. A gentle walk in nature or mindful yoga practice are more than enough to get your dose of movement medicine! - Nourish yourself properly
Nutrition is a powerful, yet widely underutilized tool to curb cravings and feel your best in sobriety. See episode 17 of the Sun & Moon Sober Living Podcast with Dr Brooke Scheller, aka the Sober Nutrition Doc for more on this important topic! - Meditate daily
A regular meditation practice helps break the craving cycle by allowing you to interrupt the chain of events between impulse and action. We begin to notice the urge to drink arise without switching on autopilot and acting out unwanted behaviors. We reclaim our power to choose, and that my friends, is a superpower! - Connect with nature
Stress, overwhelm and burnout are extreme risk factors for relapse. Rest is not a luxury, but an absolute necessity for wellbeing, and that doesn’t just apply to physical rest. Your rest might look like disconnecting from technology, taking a walk in nature, practicing restorative yoga or engaging with a creative project. - Get some rest!
